My Moms house has a WM boiler from the late 70's. The circulator is on the return side and has a steel expansion tank up between the joists which is piped to the high point on the supply side.
We have lots of problems w/ air binding and the system requires regular bleeding and draining of the tank.
Part of it Im sure is due to the pump being located on the return.
I want to change to an Extrol setup in hopes I can improve the air situation somewhat.
However I am unsure where to locate the Extrol. Our service man said to remove the relief valve put in a T and hook the Extrol to the bull of the T and reinstall the relief at the top of the T. Then he said just close the valve to the steel tank.
Can this be right? If it is I think I would need a auto air bleed. With the relief valve in the top of the T where should the bleeder be located? Also how effective would this be without an air scoop?
If anyone has any other suggestions or advice on how to do this with a minimum of repiping I would greatly appreciate hearing from you.
In my home I installed a Packaged Peerless WBV04 with a Beckett AFG and the pump was piped on the return. I switched the pump to the supply side and incorporated an air elinination systen and havent had to bleed my systen since installation 4 years ago.
An Extrol Tank has nothing to do with air elimination, it is only used for expansion. Put in a Spirovent on the supply before the flochecks, or zonevalves and hang your tank from the bottom tapping most all your problems will go away
