I live in an old home with a furnace that was installed 80 yrs ago and has been converted from coal. Obviously I need a new one but i also need a water heater. I am on steam oil heating and I would like to stay that way as I hate the feel of forced hot air. I was looking at tankless water heaters or the instant heat ones but it appears they only cover one item to run at a time. I want the convenience of having the ability not to freeze in the shower if a toilet flushes in the other bathroom but I do not want my water to heat when i am not using it as it costs just to much. I was turning my furnace off during summer months but I guess this is bad for the system. What are my best bets to go with? There are only 2 ppl in my house and we only use hot water for showers every other day. I guess in all I want the best efficiency I can get from a furnace, instant but convenient water heating so that my system is ot turning on every hr. What should I do?

The most economical way at installation is to install a tankless water heater in the boiler at installation. No tank needed and the cost is much less. Adding an indirect water heater that works off the boiler is a big expense. They run nice and cost less to heat the water but payback time will be long.
