I am told I need a new chamber on a Burnham V73 boiler. (I know nothing about this stuff except that when I'm cold I turn the heat up.) The unit must be at least 13 years old.
Is this a common repair?
What is this thing made of?
What happens if it is not done immediately?
How long can one live with a "cracked chamber?"
What makes it crack?
Is this chamber REMOVED when the boiler is cleaned annually?
Also, you know that hole that's on the front of the boiler? I think I saw online somewhere that it's called an "observation port." There is a cover over it that looks like a dial. What is the purpose of this thing, and should it be "closed" so that the fire inside is not observed, and only opened when you need to see the inside?
Thanks to all you knowledgable folks willing to help,

| Yes it is a common repair and the observation door should remain closed.
