In an attempt to make this short, Oil delivery service is also contracted to service the boiler.

Could he be tunning it wrong so I buy more oil?

I looked thru the sight window at the flame and it is orange/yellow in color and the system seems to be running alot and for long periods.

I have a hot water Superstor tank that keeps my domestic hot water at the ready.

I use a large wood stove for most of my heating however the minute I turn on the hot faucet in a sink the furnace comes on and stays on for 20 minutes.

I am trying to save money by heating with wood yet the boiler seems to be running just as much as when I had no wood stove and my oil bills are no improving since adding wood as my main heat source.

Boiler was recently serviced under the contract but I always thought the flame should be Blue when properly adjusted.

Any info will be helpful here.

Thank you.

Oil burner flames are yellow almost white. Gas flames are blue.  One way to find out for sure is to have another company come out and check it. Could be the best service call money you have ever spent ;)

Thank you Heaterman, I gave a bit of thought to the hot water storage tank!

Don't know if I am on the right track but, If the boiler is not being called on for heat on a regular basis, I suspect when I do turn on the faucet the boiler kicks on and stays on to heat the hot water tank. Under normal heating conditions the tank would be getting heated every time the boiler was on for heat so maybe what I am seeing is normal since adding the wood stove.

Just getting used to the new addition so I am sure I have some learning to do.

Thank you.

 Gary L,

I can feel your pain. Years ago my grandmother had a service contract with an oil company. When I took the house over years later I found no filter in the forced hot air furnace, nozzles everywhere in the crawl space, and the flue pipe rotted. Like Heaterman suggested, sometimes it pays to get a "second opinion."

I got the second opinion on Wednesday and good and bad came of it.

Boiler was adjusted just OK and is now on the money.

My system in conjunction with the wood stove is not the optimum and it is suggested that I run one zone at all times to keep heat and hot water flowing as designed.

Luckily I have three zones so the basement will be set to keep things moving and it does not get the heat from the wood stove. I won't be seeing the savings I had hoped for but the living area is certainly alot warmer then in years past with the radiant stove keeping us in T shirts rather then sweaters and blankets.

Not all is lost! I really like and trust the second guy and next year the old guy will loose my business because he has that age old attitude and is not "taking care of business". Thinks because He installed it, it is his and I am stuck with him and his oil at 9 cents per gallon higher then guy #2.:rf

So long as you trust him that is the most important part.
